Chinese Traditional Novels (Human Animal Hybrid)

After I have received the brief of the nature inspired human hybrid project, it reminds me of some nature inspired human hybrid characters which I saw on television dramas when I was small and they are the well-known Chinese traditional novels such as 'Journey to the West II' in 1998 and 'Gods of Honour' in 2001.

In 'Journey to the West II' from 1998, you can discover several human hybrid characters inspired by animals. On below, there are two characters from the drama which is a human hybrid inspired by animals :
Sun Wukong

The photos on above shows a monkey hybrid who's name is called Sun Wukong and as you can see the protagonist has got the features of the monkey (golden hair around his face, eyeliners is drawn on around the eyes to match the monkey's eyes looking).

Zhu Bajie

Zhu Bajie's character is based on the idea of half pig and half human. The character has featured the pig nose and ears which you can see straight away he is a pig human hybrid. You can also see he has got a big tummy and looks obesity as well.

'Gods of Honour' (2001)

In 'Gods of Honour', a character named Liu Tsan Tsi who is portrayed by Dickson Lee is one of the example of a hybrid based on human and Garuda Bird Eagle. The idea of his character is an immortal and the reason why he turned into a hybrid is because he was told by his master Yunzhongzi to help his father but he need to grab his weapon first which is at the edge of the cliff. He tries to search for it and soon he found two large apricots at the edge of the cliff and he ate them in a rush and after that, his back suddenly sprouted two large wings and his face turned into a monster looking. In the TV drama 'Gods of Honour' in 2001, his character has features the eagle's beak which was being reshaped on the mouth and he has got the eagle's wings as well. Also you can see the photo on below, the make-up artist has created depth in between the eyebrows and so it looks similar appearance to the eagles.

The Nature Inspired Human Hybrid Project

For the second part of our project, we will be creating our own nature inspired human hybrid. Through this project, it will allow me to understand how I can apply the elements of nature to a human body to create a realistic character. The aim of the project is to create a new understanding of beauty and create my own innovative beauty ideals of a human hybrid. By developing, find inspirations and investigate for my human hybrid, I am going to do further research on understanding the anatomy of the human body as well as the chosen nature elements that I am going to collaborate with the human body. Also, I will also look at examples of nature inspired human hybrid to give me inspirations to develop my design. On this project, I am going to apply the techniques of the silicone mold that I've learnt previously and develop my skills through the use of silicone molding.

Evaluations of my silicone mold - Snake bite

Through the first part of the assessment, I have understand how to create silicone mold and I have applied the techniques to create the snake bite wounds. I'm pleased with the results of my snake bite wound and I especially like and enjoy the coloring part as I can attempt to create a realistic wound. I found the most difficult part of the project is to research the snake bite wound as there isn't many photographs of showing the process of how a snake bite wound develop through weeks, but I have overcome this problems by watching documentaries and real cases of people who has experienced bitten by the snake. I think I can improve next time when sculpting my snake bite wound, I can make the edges of the bulge shapes more slant so it will look more realistic and looks more likely that they grows from the skin.
In conclusion, I think by creating the wound with silicone mold, it has build the pathway for me to explore and develop my following project, 'Nature Inspired Human Hybrid' and helps me a lot in understand what I should improved on and also gives me the ideas of how the wound look from the start of the sculpting process till the end of removing the silicone wound from the mold.

Snake Bite Wound Assessment Photographs

On below are the photos of my snake bite wound. I have taken some photos after I have applied the wound that I've created using my silicon mold on my model's skin with pros-aide and blended the edges with the isoprophy alcohol.
On below are the photos of my snake bite wound after I have applied color on top of my silicon piece.
Photos taken on my phone:
Photos taken in the studio with camera and the flash:
Close-up shots-
Mid-length shots-
Profile Shots-
I found out that the color of the wound look a bit different compare to the photos taken with the camera and flash and with the phone. The photos taken with the phone shows the wound look more yellowish color while the photos taken with the camera and the flash shows pick up the redness of the wound more and I like how you can see the details of the redness color around the wound.

Fashion and the Ageing Body

On Tuesday 27th October, I have went to an event about Fashion and the Ageing Body. It is organised by Southampton Solent University and worked together with BCS Hampshire Branch, BCSWomen. The event is supported by Age Concern and during the event, we have looked at health problems people will have when they get older and also understand how we can reconsider fashion to provide opportunities for the expanding grey market in fashion, make-up, hair and in beauty and also possible changes in the fashion industry.

Ageing population:

  • Over 23.2 million people in the UK are over 50 years old that's over a third of our population.
  • 11.4 million people over 65 years old
  • By 2035 over 65s will account for 25% if the total population
  • Fastest growing group are the over 85s
  • In 2010 over 85s accounted for 2% of the population (1.4 million)
  • By 2035 over 85s will account for 5% of the total population (3.5 million)

There is also data about people in the UK live over 100 years old in 2014;

  • 14,450 over 100 years olds
  • 780 over 105 year olds

There are some factors which lead to the rise in the proportion of elderly in our population:
  • Better diet
  • Emphasis on exercise
  • Improved housing
  • Safer jobs
  • Advances and improvement in health care

Aging and capability
Physical Changes with Age:

  • Decline in stature
  • Body weight changes
  • The range of motion of the joints reduces
  • Strength declines with age

The prevalence of disability rises with age:

  • 1 in 20 children
  • 1 in 5 working age adults
  • 1 in 2 over 65s

Sight Loss
Around 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss and it affects people of all ages (especially older people).

  • 1 in 5 over 75
  • 1 in 2 aged 90 and over

are living with some form of sight loss.

  • By 2050, numbers could be 4 million.

During the talk, we have tried out several glasses and different glasses have got different vision which represents the sight problems some people suffers in real lives. After I have tried out those glasses, I can experienced how people feel when they have sight loss problems when they get older and most of them have blurry visions which I think is hard to see what's in front of us and it makes the eyes very tiring as well.

Hearing loss
More than 10 million people in the UK have some form of hearing loss.

  • More than 70% of over 70s
  • Over 40% of over 50s

are affected.

  • By 2032 there may be 24.5 million people with hearing loss.

Manual Dexterity
Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis affect manual dexterity as well as mobility.
Nearly 8.75 million people in the UK have sought treatment for osteoarthritis, that's about a 30% of over 45s and about 40 to 50% of over 75s

  • 1 in 6 of all these people have osteoarthritis in the hands and wrists. That's around 1.56 million people (6% of over 45s)

Mobility
At least 56% of all disabled people have an impairment related to mobility.

  • 2% of the UK population use wheelchairs
  • Around two thirds of these Users are over 60 years old.

Cognition

  • Figures suggest that 1 in 3 of us will suffer some form of dementia.

Business Case
Pounds (£)

  • Households with a disabled person have a combined income of  £212 billion.

Pounds(£)

  • Total spending by households headed by someone aged 65+ is around £145 billion
  • Grey pound accounts for £320 billion a year
  • Over 50s account for 76% of the nations financial wealth.

In the UK, we will have increasing numbers of over 65's interacting with the products and interiors the design community produce. They have the disposable income to pay for these products and we have a responsibility to provide inclusive design.

Sensory and Kinaesthetic
Interactive Simulations (SKIns)

  • Loughborough University has developed a series of SKins
  • Osteoarthritis Suit in partnership with Napp Pharmaceuticals

On below, we have two models who take challenges of dressing and undressing and styling with the Ageing suits on and experienced the difficulty that the elderly faced when dressed up with an ageing body.
After they have dressed up, they talked about the difficulties they have got when having the ageing body suits on while dressing up and they both said their body feels really heavy and is hard to balance as well. Also because the body feels heavy, they found tiring when they dressed up and also they spend more time to dress up with an ageing body suits as well.
We have also looked at a video about elderly peoples who also get into fashion and the way how they are passionate about fashion. They enjoy the way they dress and it is a way to make them feel happy as well. In the video, they also said fashion is a way where they can express their ideas and creativity which I really agree with and also you have the freedom to dress up what you want.
After that, we have tried out a pair of gloves which can experienced essential tremor ( an uncontrollable shake and tremble on part of the body). We have tried to write, pick up a coffee, apply lipstick on the lips, etc, but it is so difficult as you can't control your hands because they tremble and shaking.

During the event, someone has shared his experience on a short film he has done before and they had an elderly actor in the film. While they were doing the shooting, because an elderly's movements will not be as fast as young people, they spend more time on the shooting and this is where we need to concern about the timing of the films when working with different ages of people and also planning for the shoot.

Applying the bald cap and decorations # Technical Folder

Equipments:
  • Cleanser
  • Cotton pads
  • Toner
  • Bald Cap
  • Spirit gum
  • Baby buds
  • Hard hold fixing gel
  • A tail comb
  • A paddle brush
  • Acetone
  • Old towel/ old powder puff
  • Water
  • Sponges
  • Kryolan Supracolor palette
  • Kryolan Foundation palette
  • A pair of scissor
  • Loose powder
There are different types of bald caps and they are:
  • Rubber bald caps
  • Plastic bald caps
  • Latex bald caps
  • Watermelon bald caps
  • Pre-impression bald caps
  • Woochie bald caps
Directions:
  1. Clean the model's face using the cleanser with cotton pads and then apply toner. Remember don't apply moisturizer!
  2. Apply the hard hold fixing gel onto the pale and run through the hair with your fingers. Brush the hair with the paddle brush or a comb to brush the hair away from the face. Remember it needs to be sleek and tidy.
  3. At the back of the hair, separate into two sections (left and right). Then, wrap the left section of the hair over to the right section around the head and if it doesn't stay still, apply more gel onto the hair. Do the same and wrap the right second section of the hair over the left second around the head.
  4. Do not cut the bald cap before apply it onto the head. Apply the bald cap onto the head. The back of the bald cap is longer than the front. Ask your model to hold the hair for you when applying it.
  5. Once the bald cap has applied, use a pin tail comb to tuck the hair in the bald cap.
  6. Cut the excess of the bald cap with a pair of scissor. For the area around the ear, cut a triangle shape and remember don't cut too close to the hairline.
  7. Fold the edges of the bald cap and apply spirit gum.
  8. Once, it gets tacky, stick the edges of the bald cap onto the skin. Pull the bald cap when you stick it onto the skin as you want it to look as smooth as it could be. When you get to the back of the bald cap, ask your model to look down and so the skin will stretch forward and it will make the bald cap lies on the skin as flat as it can.
  9. Get an old puff or towel and add a bit of water. Once it's wet, press it onto the edges of the bald cap to make the edges of the bald cap look more natural on the skin.
  10. Ask the model to close her/ his eyes. Use the acetone and a baby bud to melt the edges of the bald cap and it will help to make the edges look smooth and non visible.
  11. Use the colour red and white on the supracolor palette and mix to create a reddish pink colour. Then, use a stipple sponge and stipple the colour on top of the bald cap and this helps to cover the colour of the bald cap and also the hair.
  12. Use the foundation that matches the model's skin tone and stipple the colour on top of the reddish pink colour which was applied on the previous step.
  13. After that, powder the bald cap.
Fullersearth
1. Get some fullersearth into a bowl and mix it with water.
2. Then, stir well and the fullersearth will then turn into paste form to create muddy effects.
You can use a hairdryer ( in cool setting) to make the drying process faster.
With color hairspray
Kryolan colour spray: (D23 Gold) colour
Shake well the colour spray before using it. Then, spray it onto the area you want to apply the colour on.
With a comb, you can create patterns on the fullersearth and on the photo on above, you can see some line patterns created with the comb.
