Practicing my snake bite wound

Equipments:

Directions: 
1. On below is the wound that I will be using for my snake bite project.
On below is the wound that I've created with my first mold and I'm going to use it for practice of my snake bite wound.
2. Apply barrier foam to the area that you going to place the wound on your skin. After that, apply pros-aide with a baby bud on the area you want to place the wound on your skin and on the back of the wound as well. Make sure the edges on the wound is covered with pros-aide as well. After the glue gets tacky and clear on both the skin and also on the back of the wound, stick the wound onto the skin and press it with your hand. 
3. After the wound has stick onto the skin nicely, use the isoprophy alcohol and a baby bud to blend the edges of the wound to the skin. This will help to melt the harsh lines of the wound.
4. Add some color to the wound. I have first mixed the color on the fx palette with isoprophy alcohol (to match the skin tone). Then, I have mixed the color in yellowish brown color to create the color on the wound. After that, I have applied some red and brown color around the wound to create redness on the skin. In order to create depth and more three dimensional on the shape of the wound, I have added some dark brown color on the side of the shapes to make them stand out more. I have also mixed the yellowish color with white to create shine effect on the wound.
 5. After that, I have applied some multi gel on the area that I want the eschar to place on and then I have used ground coffee beans to place on top. After it dries a while, I have added black colours on top of it so as to create dark eschar.

To improve, I can blend the red and brown color around the edges more so it will not have harsh lines. On above, I have compared the wound before I have applied the pus on and after. I really like how the snake bite wound look after I have applied the pus as it gives a more realistic result and also create more shine on the wound.

Experimenting and creating eschar effects

For my snake bite wound design, it has involved eschar on the wound and on below, I have tested out what method I should use to create a more realistic eschar effect and the rough texture of it.

With supracolor palette:
I have started off using the black color on the supracolor palette and use the back of the brush and stipple the color onto my hand.
 By using the supracolor palette, I think it doesn't work to create the eschar effect as the texture is not seen clearly and also I can't create the rough texture with it because it is very smooth and a bit shiny. 

After that, I started to think what I can use to create eschar texture and then I have come up an idea using ground coffee beans. After that, I have tried out this idea on my hand to see what it looks like.

 In order to stick the ground coffee beans onto the skin, I have used the multi gel and stick them onto the skin.
On below, it shows what the ground coffee beans looks like when putting on top of the multi gel on the skin. Although the ground coffee beans melts, but I like how you can still see the texture of it and I think it will works with the eschar effect. In order to create the black color for the eschar, I have tried to use the black color of the supracolor palette and applied on top of the ground coffee beans. I think the ground coffee beans work well with the eschar effect but in order to improve, I can apply more ground coffee beans onto the skin and lesser multi gel to let it dry quicker.

For the second sculpting, I have followed the design that I've created for the snake bite. This time, I have made the wound bigger and also add more bumpness for the wound to make it look more three dimensional.

On above shows the process of removing the wound from the mold by powdering it with baby powder.
 I'm pleased with result of the wound this time and compare to the first wound that I've done on the first mold, the shape of the wound from the second mold looks more bold which looks more three dimensional. On the second wound, the edges is more clean and the distribution of the product is more even. Overall, I'm pleased with the result of my second mold and the wound I've created from it and I'm going to use this wound for my snake bite project.

Making a mold for my snake bite wound # Technical Folder

Equipments:
  • The sculpture on a piece of plastic
  • A scale
  • Cotton pads
  • Baby buds
  • Cling film
  • A mask
  • Silicone A
  • Silicone B
  • Wooden stick
  • Gloves
  • Baby Wipes
  • Measuring cups
  • Deadener
  • Pigments
  • A scissor
  • Wooden Laminating brushes
  • Super Baldiez 
  • Isoprophy Alcohol 
  • Fixing Spray
  • Petrolease
  • Baby Powder
  • Hot glue gun
Directions:
1.  Tie your hair back and wear a mask and gloves. Cover the table with cling film. Shake the fixing spray well before spraying it onto the sculpture. Don't spray too much and when spraying, keep 20 cm away from the sculpture. Spray the sculpting with fixing spray first (next to the open window).
2. After the fixing spray is dry, shake the petrolease well and spray onto the sculpture ( keep 20 cm away from the sculpture).
3. After the petrolease is dry on the sculpture. Cut the measuring cup in half and place the cup around the sculptiure on the plastic and use the hot glue gun to glue the cup down so this helps to not leak any silicon on the later step. Make sure you cover all the gaps.
4. Label the wooden stick: A and B. Label A stick is used for Silicone A while Label B stick is for silicone B. Remember don't use the same stick to pour the silicon out of the bottle!
5. Wear different gloves when pouring the silicone A and B.  Make sure there is no dirt inside the measuring cup, use a cleansing wipe to clean the cup first and then use a dry towel to make sure it is dry before using it. Pour 30g of Silicone A into the measuring cup with the A wooden stick and then use the B wooden stick to pour 30g of Silicone B into the cup as well (use the scale). The amount of silicon A and B must be the same! The amount of silicon used depends on how big the sculpture is. The bigger the sculpture, the more silicon you will need for your mold. Make sure the lid is tightly on and use a clean wipe to clean the silicon bottle after using it.
6. Stir the mixture of Silicone A and B together with a new wooden stick and make sure there is no air bubbles before pouring onto the sculpture.
7. Wait at least an hour for it to dry and after it is dry,it will become solid form and then you can remove the mold from the plastic.
On above are the photos of my mold after it has removed from the plastic.
8. Use Isoprophy alcohol and cotton pad to clean the mold and make sure no clay is sticking on it and no fingerprints.
9. Spray the mold with Petrolease first (spray 20 cm away from the mold) and leave it to dry.
10. Get a new measuring cup and mix super baldiez and isoprophy alcohol or baldiez and Acetone. The measurement will be 1 super baldiez or baldiez and 2 isoprophy alcohol or acetone. Then, apply at least two layers of the mixture onto the mold. Remember to let it dry after putting a layer. Make sure it goes every where on the mold. You can use the hairdryer (COOL SETTING) to help you to dry more quickly.
11. Label Stick A, B and C. Stick A is for pouring silicone A, B is for pouring B and C is for pouring the deadener.
12. Measure 8g of silicone A into a new measuring cup and then measure 8g of silicone B with the scale and mix together. Remember silicone A and B must be the same amount and change different gloves when pouring silicone A and B! Silicone A and B can add up to 16 g.
13. Change the gloves and use stick C to pour deadener into the mixture as well. Use the scale to measure 10 - 12 g of the deadener. The deadener is to use for soften the mold. The amount of the deadener must be 60 to 75% of the mixture of silicone A and B. Stir the mixture of the silicon A, B and the deadener well with a new wooden stick.
14. Add pigments to the mixture. (The color that you want to wound to look like or the colour matches your model's skin tone)
15. Stir the mixture well and apply it onto the mold. Use a ruler or the silver flat tool to even the distributions of the product.
16. Use Naphtha with baby bud to clean the edges of the mold.
17. After the wound is dry, use baby powder to powder the mold with a wooden laminating brush.
18. Then, remove the wound from the mold by powdering from the edges. Remember to keep powdering underneath when you lift the wound out.
On above is the first wound that I've done from my snake bite mold. I like how you can see the bumpness of the shapes on the wound, To improve, I will need to even the distribution of the wound more using the flat silver tool. Also, I can clean the edges with the naphtha more. I think the shape of the wound can be more bold and I've decided to make another sculpture and mold for my project.

Sculpting my snake bite wound #Technical Folder

Directions:
1. First, I have warmed the clap up with the hair dryer so later I can scrap some out more easier with the sculpting tool.
2. After that, I have scraped out some clay and place it onto the plastic.
3. Then, I have tried to model the snake bite wounds following my snake bite design.

On above is the photo of my snake bite sculpting. I have followed and refer to the drawing that I did on above. To help me for sculpting the shapes, I have used different sculpting tools to help me. When sculpting, make sure the edges is as smooth as it can be as therefore it will make the wound look more realistic and lie flat on the skin after it is finish. Because as you can see on the photo, I have created an uneven and a bit bumpness surface which shows the process of the coagulation on the skin.

Western Diamondback Rattlesnake bite - My project

Storyline:
The protagonist, Sara lives in United States and she went to the Sonoran Desert around 30 miles west to Maricopa in Arizona. She is 27 years old and the reason she went there was because four of her friends have organised a photography trip and they asked her to join. And so the day came and they went to the Sonoran Desert by cars. She was wearing a short sleeves T-shirt, knee length shorts and a pair of sandals. Soon, they have arrived the Sonoran Desert. She got every things set up and ready to take photos but she didn't realized a western diamondback rattlesnake was next to her and she accidentally stepped on it. She got bitten on the right foot of the Inferior Extensor Retinaculum area. Her friend quickly drove her to the nearest medical center, Banner Health Center in Maricopa and they arrived at the medical center within an hour. She has got a venomous snake bite and the wound was infected, but luckily she was rescued after injected the antivenom. 

For my project, I am going to show what the snake bite wounds looks like after 6 weeks. I'm going to follow the photo on below of how it looks like and adjust it to the design of my rattlesnake bite. Therefore, my design will show how the wound looks like a week before the wound on the photo below.

On above is a photo of a rattlesnake bite progression after 7 weeks. You can see on the photo that there is eschar formation, the blood changes into a coagulation form and experience tissue loss. The healing process takes place and you can see the edges of the wound starts to lift up. The wound is formed followed by the cease of blood loss from a damaged vessel and this shows the progress of recovery. So because I want to present my snake bite wound as after 6 weeks the victim was bitten by the western diamondback rattlesnake, it will be around 1 week earlier than the wound on the photo above. I have made some changes on the snake bite design and I will put more reddish color around the wounds to show the damaged blood vessels more as it will be more serious than the one after 7 weeks. I will keep the eschar formation on my wound as to show it has started the healing process. Also, for the wound after 6 weeks, it refers to the wound healing process which I have researched previously and there should be exudate under the scab. Granulation tissue which is a new vascular tissue in granular will then form on an ulcer or the healing surface of the wound.

From the photo of the 7 weeks snake bite wounds, you can see the wound isn't just yellow in color, but also have brownish color as well. This helps to create depth on the wound.. Also, for my wound design, it will not be as bump as the wound (7 weeks snake bite photo on above) as to show the granulation tissue on the skin. I will add shine on the wound by using vaseline as the fibres trap many red blood cells and platelets to form a jelly like clot.
